Hair - The evidence
The short list of hair loss treatments with real trials behind them
Female pattern hair loss has a Cochrane review and a body of randomized evidence. Most of what is marketed to women sits outside it entirely.
01 What has been through review
There is a Cochrane review of interventions for female pattern hair loss and a published summary of evidence-based treatments. That is an unusually solid foundation for a category this crowded, and it is almost never where the conversation starts.
Minoxidil is the most studied topical option and its mechanism of action on hair growth is documented rather than inferred. Low-level light therapy has been through at least one randomized 24-week trial. Both are narrower in effect than the advertising suggests and better evidenced than most alternatives.
02 The shed is not the failure
Treatments that push resting follicles back into growth have to end the resting phase first, and ending it means the old hair lets go. From outside, that is indistinguishable from deterioration, and it arrives at roughly the point people expect improvement.
The practical discipline is unromantic: change one variable, photograph the part line in fixed light on day one, and do not judge before week twelve.
03 It is not vanity
Quality of life in women with female pattern hair loss has been formally studied, and the impact is substantial. That research exists precisely because the complaint has historically been dismissed. Anyone treating this as cosmetic triviality is arguing against the literature.
The short version
- Female pattern hair loss has been through Cochrane review. Start from that, not from a comparison chart.
- Minoxidil has a documented mechanism and a documented early shedding phase.
- The psychological burden is measured in the literature, and it is not vanity.
